Russia - Stavropol Kray

Project Overview

Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences' Stavropol Research Institute of Agriculture (SRIA) and Space Research Institute (IKI) are collaborating to conduct researches aimed to develop remote sensing methods for annual land use and crop types mapping and yield  assessment at the regional level. The current project phase is research and development.

The test site consists of two levels: regional (Stavropol kray) and local (experimental fields), which are different in functional assignment and frequency of measurement of biophysical and chemical parameters.

Goals of the site in term of:

1. Land-use and crop types mapping (annually)

2. Crop biophysical parameters assessment (weekly)

3. Crop yield assessment (annually)

4. Near real-time crop conditions assessment and stress detection (weekly)

5. Environmental impact of agricultural activity assessment


Mapping Resolution:

100-250 meters for weekly satellite data derived thematic products at regional level
10-30 meters for annual satellite data derived thematic products at regional level
1-5 meters for episodic field-level estimates

Timelines (with regards to growing season): Crop type estimations are done once within vegetation season. Field data are delivered within two weeks after acquisitions.

Operational implementation plans: IKI and SRIA, in the framework of joint cooperation, are conducted joint activities for two years.

Implementation Plans

Project Objectives:

Space Research Institute (IKI) and Stavropol Research Institute of Agriculture (SRIA), in the framework of joint cooperation are conducting joint activities for two years.

Plans for Next Growing Season:

The project objectives for 2014 were met; activities will be continued in 2015. The VEGA-GEOGLAM system was introduced during the SIGMA annual progress meeting in China (Beijing, 22-25 October 2014). The field data collection and analysis were performed using well known and proved "best practice" approaches.


Site Description

Stavropol Kray is situated in the South of the European part of Russia mainly in steppe and semi-desert zones. 5,8 mln ha (more than 80% of total region area) are covered by agricultural lands, and 4 mln ha of them are arable lands, 2,1 mln ha are under cereals (main crop is winter wheat). Gross grain harvest in Stavropol kray in average is about 7 mln tons, and grain yield is 3,3 ton/ha.

Stavropol test site has S=66000 sq. km. It was organised in 2014 by the Stavropol Research Institute of Agriculture and Space Research Institute to conduct researches aimed to develop remote sensing methods for annual land use and crop types mapping and yield assessment at the regional level.

Typical Field Size (Area): 30 - 130 ha

Crop Types: winter wheat, spring/winter barley, peas, soybean, sunflower, winter rapeseed, perennial grasses

Typical Crop Rotation: fallow/peas – winter wheat – winter rapeseed - winter wheat

Crop Calendar: September-July - winter crops; April-October - spring and summer crops

Climatic Zone: Unsustainable moisturizing with a temperate-continental type of climate.

Annual temperature: 9.6 °C

Annual precipitation: 560mm

Soil Texture: 2 soil zones: chestnut soils (3.54 mln ha) and chernozems  (3.15 mln ha).

Topography: The landscape is mostly flat with slopes ranging from 0% to 2%; and near 15% of the territory is hilly with slopes from more than 2%. So potential risk of wind (95%) and water (82%) erosion is high; joint manifestation of both types of erosion is effected more than 77% of kray territory.

Soils: Dominant soils are chestnut soils (3.54 mln ha) and chernozems (3.15 mln ha). Large areas are affected by salinity of various degrees with chloride-sulphate, sulphate and sulphate-chloride type of salinity.

Drainage class/irrigation: Soil drainage is ranging from poor to well drained.

Other Site Specifications: High potential risk of wind (95%) and water (82%) erosion; joint manifestation of both types of erosion is 77% of kray territory. Large areas in Stavropol kray are affected by salinity of various degrees with chloride-sulphate, sulphate and sulphate-chloride type of salinity.

Agricultural methods used: Crop types are spring/winter wheat, spring/winter barley, peas, soybean, sunflower, winter rapeseed, perennial grasses. Typical crop rotation is: fallow/peas – winter wheat – winter rapeseed - winter wheat. Farming methods are no-till and tillage-based.

Estimating Crop Areas
Statistical Units: ha, Crop area estimations are planned to be done at least on region-level (kray level), on farm level at several cases   

Crop Growing Conditions Over the Growing Season
The following parameters are to be estimated: Temperature, Precipitation, Soil Moisture, humus, NPK

Estimation of Biophysical Variables
Crop biophysical variables (NDVI, biomass, fAPAR, LAI, yield, fCover). NDVI and LAI estimates are to be processed with web-service Vega on a weekly basis through the whole growing season.
