Project Overview

Goals of the site in terms of:

 Mapping Resolution: 10 m
 
Timeliness (with regards to growing season): Emphasis will be on monitoring crop growth during the dry and mostly cloud free winter months

Implementation Plans

Crop identification and acreage estimation:
We have conducted a large study under the STARS project for the Barisal site (Fig 1). We collected information on croptypes for 2 years. In the coming season (winter 2016 - 2017), we will start a wheat blast monitoring project, for which we will continue to collect information on crop types.
We will also engage in a yield estimation study on farmers fields in the Dinajpur and Alamdanga regions. For that project, we will collect information on crop types and digitize field boundaries.


Residue and Tillage mapping:
We are monitoring subsets of the AOI with an UAV, and some fields are left fallow during the dry winter months.


Soil moisture:
We will be monitoring soil moisture for irrigation experiments


Crop biophysical variables:
Percent ground cover (fCover) will be collected from farmers fields for another project, for which we are developing a smart phone app to estimate ground cover from RGB photos.
We are also running irrigation, nutrient and varietal experiments  on farmers fields in that region. For those experiments, we are also collecting LAI, fAPAR, and yield  data.
Furthermore, we will make crop cuts in farmers fields, for yield and biomass estimation of maize, wheat, rice and possibly other crops, such as mungbeans.

In Situ Observations

    Frequency: Every 2 weeks from emergence until maturity

    Use of UAV (5 bands), 10 cm resolution

    Frequency: Every 2 weeks
  3. Parameter: Crop type and field boundaries
    Data Collection Protocol:

    Use of UAV (RGB images)

    Frequency: Once per season
  4. Parameter: Ground Cover ( fCover)
    Data Collection Protocol:

    RGB photos taken with smart phones from above (NADIR), analysis with CanEye, possibly automated program

    Frequency: Every 2 weeks for wheat and mungbean, maize from crop emergence until crop reaches about 1 m height
